Some are calling it one of the best buzzer-beaters of the season, second of course to the 3-point game winning shot by Christian Watford of Indiana University. Watford’s scoring shot would upset then No. 1 ranked University of Kentucky ending the game 73-72. Back in Durham, North Carolina most probably would not have expected the final 10 minutes of the second half of an interesting match-up between the Duke Blue Devils and the Florida State University – Seminoles (FSU) to end in a similar fashion. The fact is, it did. The question fans are pondering a day later: was it all a dream? The fact is, the 45-home game winning streak at Cameron Indoor Stadium has been wiped clean. Subsequently, the Blue Devils are tied with Florida State and, as of today, North Carolina State for the No. 1 position in the Atlantic Coast Conference. All teams have a 4-1 record.
Duke’s highest lead in the first was nine points. They even ended the first half up by six after Michael Snaer hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer. Well into the second half, however, FSU would not let Duke enjoy a comfortable margin. Scoring 7 out of 14 3-point shots and 54% overall, the Seminoles crushed Duke’s chance to tie their own record by winning 46 consecutive games at home. Junior, Michael Snaer, would shoot another 3-pointer at the buzzer that would topple the Blue Devils and leave the Cameron Crazies stunned.
“This has just been a great week for our program,” said Snaer. “We’re playing our best basketball right now. Guys are finding their roles and we understand what it takes to win a game. We’ve gained some momentum,” he continued. After a 20-point loss to ACC rival school Clemson University and other upsets by Princeton and Harvard, fans were unsure how the Seminole’s season would pan out. Recent wins against ranked teams like the Tar Heels and Duke, however, have the team feeling much more optimistic.
Next up Florida State will face Wake Forest University at 7:00 PM Eastern Standard Time this Wednesday. Duke, on the other hand, will face-off with the Terps at the University of Maryland in College Park on the same night at 9:00 PM.
