If you love traveling, then you’ll likely be happy regardless of the type of trip that you take. After all, to the traveler, even a visit to a small and obscure city can be an eye-opening experience.
But it’s also true that some trips stand out more than others. The adventures we take to the far-flung corners of the planet, the ones that involve traveling long distances to places vastly different to our homes, are the ones that live long in the memory.
Those trips require a little more thought and planning. You can dip into Las Vegas for the weekend pretty easily, but the same can’t be said for a trip that involves island hopping around Southeast Asia.
In this post, we’ll look at some tried-and-tested tips that’ll help you to get the most from your long distance adventures.
Go At The Right Time
It’s true that you can have a good time in great destinations regardless of when you visit. But having the best time? There’ll likely be specific periods of the year that make this possible. For instance, let’s say you’re visiting Southeast Asia, the example we gave above. Some parts of that region experience heavy rainy seasons, which will reduce the amount of exploring you can do. If you’re traveling long distances to reach the destination, then ensure that you can enjoy it to the fullest once you’re there. You might pay more money than you would if you visited during the low season, but it’ll be worth it.
Go For Long Enough
You’ll likely spend the first few days of your trip recovering from the long flight you took. If you’re only visiting for a week, then that means you’ll only have a few days where you have all the energy required to make the most of your visit. If you’re going to travel halfway around the world, then it’s recommended to go for as much time as you can afford. If you visit for three weeks, you’ll have plenty of time to see all the sights and do all the things you want to do, without being rushed.
Research Must-Dos
There are some destinations you can just visit and figure out when you’re there. And the long-distance destination you’re planning to visit may be one of those places too. But given the time, energy, and money required to visit those places, it’s best not to take the chance.
You’ll feel much more confident about having an all-time great trip if you’ve done plenty of research about the essential things to do (and what to avoid) before you head off to the airport. There’ll likely be plenty of websites that provide the information you need, but if there’s not, then ask on community forums — Reddit, for example, can be a great place to connect with people who have already visited your chosen destination.
Be Ready to Capture the Moments
If you forget to take photos on a trip to a destination close to your home, then it’s no big deal. You’ll likely be back at some point. But forgetting to capture memorable moments when you’re in destinations thousands of miles away from where you live? That’s risky. You may be there only once in your life. So make sure you’re ready to take as many photos and videos as possible.
It’s recommended to clear space on your smartphone and invest in protective casings that’ll keep your device safe even when you’re out in the wild; there are some excellent iPhone housings that are fully waterproof, which will allow you to take photos even when you’re underwater. It’s also recommended to have plenty of cloud storage ready, so you can upload your photos and videos while on the move.
Find a Guide
It can be a little daunting visiting an exotic place so far from home. Part of the charm of visiting those places is that things are so different from what you know, but that can also be a drawback. We’re more inclined to play things safe and avoid taking risks than we would be in places that we feel that we know. That’s a smart approach to take, but it can also mean that we miss out on valuable experiences. One way to feel comfortable and make the most of your chosen destination is to find a tour to join. That way, you can have confidence that you’ll be safe. You’ll also be less likely to miss out on the must-see sights of the destination.
