Nicolas Cloutier of hip Parisian perfume and beauty store Nose, provided for his advice when it comes to looking after your moustache this Movember.
Starting November 1, Movember is the month-long annual charity event which sees men grow out their whiskers to raise awareness and cash for the fight against male cancers.
But, as any moustache maestro will tell you, there’s an art to maintaining a handsomely hirstute upper lip. Here are Monsieur Cloutier’s top tips:
1. “A good shave starts with an application of pre-shave lotion, which softens your beard and prepares your skin for the blade. My recommendation: Arlington pre-shave lotion by D.R. Harris.”
2. “To treat nicks and cuts, forget the old toilet tissue remedy. I recommend using an alum stone as an aftershave treatment (for its astringent properties) and as a way to stop the bleeding from tiny cuts (for its hemostatic properties). Wet the alum stone under cold water and run it slowly across the skin. You can find this product in pharmacies.”
3. “Applying aftershave is an important step, as this is usually a tonic, slightly antiseptic lotion that closes the pores. My recommendation: Pink aftershave by D.R. Harris.”
4. “Next, to style your mustache, consider applying a little scented wax. Of course, this product is only useful on thick and long mustaches! My recommendation: Moustache wax by Penhaligon’s.”
5. “Otherwise, to moisturize your mustache and make it softer to the touch, I use a little trick: a hair mask! My recommendation: Mask No. 1: L’Hydratation by David Mallett.”
“Voilà – that’s everything you need to know!”
