We live with history all around us, both familiar and perhaps not so familiar. Battles were fought, marriages were performed, and lives were lived. The ghosts of the past are just that, the energy and spirit of a person or persons who once inhabited a space or location. New York City has historical locations and places of note on almost every block. Living in a historical building is the ultimate form of spirited living for a hip urban abode. On the market now is a beautiful condo in the Cass Gilbert building at 130 West 30th Street.
Cass Gilbert is one of New York’s most important architects who left his mark in the early 20th Century. Gilbert’s most noted building is the Woolworth Building that fronts City Hall Park. It was completed in 1913 and at the time was the tallest skyscraper in the city. Today it remains an iconic building and is very popular for both city dwellers and tourists. Other famous Gilbert buildings include the New York Life Building on Madison Square Park, the U.S. Custom House at the foot of Broadway, and the Federal Courthouse located at Foley Square.
The Cass Gilbert building was also designed by Mr. Gilbert. It was built in 1927 and features many stylistic elements of the Art Deco period. At the time it was built primarily for commercial businesses but in 2003 it underwent a complete renovation and was converted into condominium apartments.
The 20 story building has a two-tone terracotta paneled facade that includes friezes of Assyrian winged horses, roaring lions, and chariots. It is registered as a National Historic Landmark and has 45 apartments. Each of the loft apartments was designed by Alfredo Carbalude and Michele Morris of CMA Design Studio. This apartment is 1 bedroom and features 2 full baths. It comes with an in-unit washer and dryer, 11 foot ceilings, and doorman. The gourmet kitchen has hand-crafted rift-cut white oak cabinets, Calcutta marble counters and backsplashes, a SubZero refrigerator, Miele dishwasher, stainless steel oven, and wine cooler. Other features of this unit include: 7 over-sized bronze cased windows, a 20 x 12 corner master bedroom suite complete with a windowed bathroom.
