How To Organize Your Home When It’s Cluttered

A cluttered home is not something you want to be living in on a permanent basis. Existing in a cluttered space is only going to impact your own mental well-being, not to mention causing physical risk to you, your other household members and any guests who may come to visit.

Organizing your home when it’s cluttered might seem like a challenge but it’s definitely one to take on in order to make your environment more enjoyable to live in. With that being said, here are some helpful tips to organize your home when it’s cluttered, should it ever get to a point where it’s become overwhelming.

Declutter regularly

The best way to go about organizing your home when it’s cluttered is to make sure you declutter your spaces regularly. It’s important that you’ve decluttered your home every season or so because there will likely be a lot that you collect in that time.

Add a few more household members to your home and you’ve dramatically increased the amount of clutter and stuff coming into the property.

It’s worth setting a note in your diary to organize a declutter every now and then so that you don’t forget about doing it. Decluttering can be a real help to sort out anything that you’ve chucked away in a drawer or closet and forgotten about.

Set aside some time each week for a quick tidy-up

Setting a bit of time aside each week is a great way to manage your home when needing to tidy it up. It can often get a little overwhelming to clean and tidy up your home, especially if you have a bigger home and therefore more rooms to contend with.

Instead of having to do your big cleans on the weekend, a time when you should be relaxing or enjoying some downtime, try to do a bit every so often or even every day and you’ll find that you don’t have as much to do on the weekends when you’ve got other plans.

Setting aside this time is helpful and it can be great for keeping your home organized, ensuring everything is found in its right place and not somewhere else.

Create a schedule for cleaning

Creating a cleaning schedule is a great way of keeping on top of your household management. It’s unfair to have to do it all yourself, which is why it’s good to create a cleaning schedule that all household members can contribute to.

Unless you have the luxury of hiring a cleaner every week, it’s important to try and maintain a schedule where you clean and touch up as you go.

It might be worth allocating tasks to certain household members, with some needing to do more basic stuff over the more complex tasks due to their age. With everyone involved, cleaning the home will be a lot easier to manage and get done so that you can enjoy your space and more downtime during the week and weekend.

Choose a sorting system when decluttering

While on the topic of decluttering, it’s important to have a system in place to make it easier for yourself to complete.

When you decide to declutter, work through each room individually and separate stuff into four categories:

  • Keep
  • Sell
  • Recycle/Dispose
  • Donate

By separating your belongings into the four categories, you’ll hopefully find that more of the stuff you do have either goes to a second home or gets recycled. You want to try and dispose of as little as possible in order to improve the environment and reduce your carbon footprint.

Again, going room by room is going to make it a more manageable effort and you’ll likely get more of it done sooner as a result of doing it in manageable chunks. Doing it all at once will likely result in you getting demotivated and not doing it with enough detail room by room.

Be more mindful of what you’re buying and bringing into the home

When you’re trying to keep your home organized and clutter-free, you should be more mindful of what you’re buying and therefore bringing into the home. If you’re buying quite often, then that’s all contributing to what belongings are taking up the space.

Ask yourself a few questions when it comes to buying something new. What is the purpose of buying it? Does it add value or is it necessary to improve quality of life? These questions may help in stopping you from buying some items and saving on space as a result.

Being more mindful helps you to be better with what you buy and how regularly you buy it as a household.

Make sure everything has its place

Everything in your home should have its own place. From kitchen organization to how you arrange your closet storage, it’s important to ensure everything has its home.

This is important because by ensuring everything has a rightful place, you help to stop the clutter from building up and getting out of hand. It also provides a bit of mental positivity, by knowing that everything can be found, rather than throwing something into a closet and struggling to find it six months later.

Work with all your family to sort through stuff

To help declutter and keep organized, it’s important that you’re working with all your family to sort through stuff. At the end of the day, you might not know what belongs to each individual household member. The last thing you want to do is chuck something out that might not be yours and it cause an upset.

Be sure to involve your family in all your decluttering and organizing efforts so that you help ensure your home stays clean and tidy for everyone in the home.

These tips will hopefully help your family home stay more organized and clutter-free in 2025 and beyond. Be sure to implement these tips to help your family home if it’s cluttered right now.
