The tuxedo made a big comeback last weekend at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards. Classic black was in full force and many of the male stars wore designer lines geared toward a slim build. On display were Burberry, Boss and Brioni. However, one actor decided to change it up in that sea of penguins — Matt LeBlanc. With his silver hair, he looked striking and dapper wearing his navy blue tuxedo by Otto.
Upon winning the Best Actor in a TV Comedy for his acting on Episodes he told several media outlets that his blue tux was the lucky one in his stable of formal wear. LeBlanc said, “This is the winning tuxedo. This is the lucky one.” He previously wore it in 2003 when he was an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nominee for his role as Joey on Friends. Alas, he didn’t win the award that year and fortunately his Otto tuxedo didn’t end up at a used clothing store.
LeBlanc’s navy tuxedo has wide peak satin lapels and he pared it with a wide navy herringbone silk tie. Overall the fit of his vintage duds showed solid tailoring, the key for any look, formal or not. LeBlanc’s silvery grey hair created a subtle contrast to his blue threads, focusing onlooker’s attention not on his clothing, but rather on his face. The navy worked to “up light” his eyes and his classic Joey smile. Besides the Golden Globe, he wins props for not allowing his clothes upstage him and it was clear that he felt comfortable wearing a vintage look that enhanced his overall appearance.
Navy is a great choice of color when thinking of alternatives to the classic black tuxedo. It remains masculine, subtle and has a formal sensibility, but at the same time allows the wearer to be separated from the masses. A navy blue tuxedo may not be the first choice for all formal occasions, but it is a great option and in my opinion a must have when a man wants to step out of the crowd and shake up the average look. Every man should consider adding a well-constructed navy tuxedo to his wardrobe, in order to add a touch of originality to the next formal night on the town.
