On Saturday, October 19th The Far Hills Race Meeting Association celebrated the 93rd edition of New Jersey’s most prestigious steeplechase horse race – the Far Hills Race Meeting. Over 35,000 spectators gathered at Moorland Farm for the event’s unique mix of society and sport, featuring top thoroughbred jump racing, individualized tailgating parties and culinary feasts set against the stunning backdrop of New Jersey’s fall foliage. The event proceeds benefited the programs and services of Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ.
Approximately 75 of the finest thoroughbreds on the National Steeplechase Association circuit, along with their owners, trainers and jockeys, traveled to Mooreland farms to compete in seven races. Purses ranged from $25,000-$250,000-the largest of any steeplechase race in the country.
The race organizers implemented a set of new security policies to address alcohol-related incidents, enhance safety and ensure a pleasant experience for Race Day patrons. The race, also known as “The Hunt”, had quite the past for being known as huge drunken party amongst the younger crowd. With the new policies in place, most of the debauchery was stopped.
However, a short walk down the hill from the Hilltop tents to the Infield spaces you could see a huge difference. The Hilltop was more family oriented with nicely decorated tailgates, whereas the Infield spaces were full of drunk college students…quite the difference. This also goes to say that the spaces in the Hilltop are far more expensive than the Infield. I experienced both sides and got a totally different feeling from each. It was like being in a completely different world. I only lasted about 20 minutes or so in the Infield and was ready to get back to the Paddock and Hilltop area.
The Far Hills Race Meeting is great for families, friends and college students. There is a place for all. With such a long and rich history, the Far Hills Race Meeting will continue to be a staple in the social scene on the east coast. See you next year at the races!
