Carnegie Hall Notables Celebrated their Season Opener with Performances by Gabriel Kahane and Guests

Carnegie Hall Notables

On Monday, December 17, 2012 Carnegie Hall Notables presented (Un) Common Threads: Blurring Genres in the 21st Century in Zankel Hall.  The event, hosted by Jimmy Zankel, Co-Chair of the Notables, included a performance by composer, pianist and singer Gabriel Kahane. The performance included excerpts from Craiglistlieder; his 2012 musical February House and collaborations with specials guests (Julian Lage, Aoife O’ Donovan and the American Contemporary Music Ensemble).

The group performed various folk and bluegrass pieces that left the audience captivated by the end of the performance. These talented artists were able to play multiple instruments, as well as sing. When Kahane belted out the first note, I knew that it was going to be a great performance. Accompanying Kahane with an equally amazing voice was Aoife O’ Donovan, whose powerful voice carried throughout the auditorium. Her voice harks back to a time gone by when singers actually knew how to sing, no auto-tune or fancy audio tricks. She was able to smoothly transition through each song, presenting a completely different, yet great sound. Anyone who left Zankel Hall unsatisfied may need to have their brain examined. It was truly a phenomenal concert.

Immediately following the concert, guests were shipped off to the after-party in luxury coach buses to the Empire Hotel Rooftop. While in the enclosed rooftop, guests sipped on complimentary drinks provided by Bacardi (Grey Goose, Barcardi and Dewars) and savored passed hors d’œuvres. This was a real party, not the type of event that people go just to be seen. On one side of the room, there was a group of guests dancing to the sounds of DJs Timo & Alan and one other there were guests toasting to the night. The (Un) Common Threads: Blurring Genres in the 21st Century performance and after-party proved to be a great season opener for the Carnegie Hall Notables.
