This past weekend, University of Virginia and Yale faced off at the Harriman Cup at Meadowbrook Polo Grounds. Celebrating over a quarter-century of polo tradition between University of Virginia and Yale, the Harriman Cup Polo Match is a fundraiser and social event commemorating the life of diplomat, polo player, and former New York governor Averell Harriman.
The event brought together polo fans, Yale and UVa alums (and family members) preppies and socialites to experience this annual event.
The day was filled with activities to keep guests occupied including a bike polo exhibition, alumni polo match, award ceremony and a dance party. Some of the award ceremony categories were: best dog, best hat, best tailgate and best dressed man and woman.
The preps were in full effect at the Harriman Cup. There was tons of Lily Pulitzer, Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines and Ralph Lauren. There were even preppy vendors, such as JP Crickets, who makes bespoke Prince Albert slippers for men and women. To keep the energy up, attendees were able to sample Frava, the first naturally caffeinated juice.
The event ended in a full swinging dance party with a DJ. The attendees danced the evening away regardless if their team won. However, UVa had bragging rights as their alumni team won the match. But who could be upset when there are drinks and dancing involved?
Through the efforts of the Harriman Cup organization, over $700,000 has been raised for the schools’ undergraduate polo teams. If you have never been to the Harriman Cup, I implore you to attend next year. It is both fun and entertaining. Also, it’s a great way to experience a polo match in New York.
Friend of LuxuriousPROTOTYPE, Annika Connor, served as a host for the Harriman Cup and a judge for the hat contest.
Frederick Castleberry of UnabashedlyPrep.com was on the scene to capture all of the great preppy outfits.
