On Thursday, November 14th The Root hosted the Root 100 Creative and Influential African-American Awards Ceremony & Dinner at the Tribeca Rooftop in Manhattan. The Root is a news, opinion and culture site for African-American influencers. Founded in 2008, under the leadership of Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., The Root provides smart, timely coverage of breaking news, thought-provoking commentary and gives voice to a changing, more diverse America. The event consisted of a cocktail hour, award/dinner and after party.
The evening started off on a good note as guests received a complimentary bottle of champagne upon arrival in the lobby. After a quick elevator ride to the rooftop lounge, guests were greeted with a lavish spread of sushi, veggies and cheese. As for the drinks, the guests had their choice at the fully stocked open bar. In addition to the spread, the wait staff passed hor ‘dourves.
The room started to fill up as guests mingled with old and new friends. The cocktail hour wasn’t all about drinks and food, it also was entertaining. There was a photo booth and an interactive floor plan contest, provided by Marriott, the official sponsor of the event.
After the cocktail hour followed the award ceremony and dinner which was hosted by T.J. Holmes, Donna Byrd, Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Lyne Pitts. After a few jokes and hearty laughs, the award ceremony proceeded. One by one the names of the honorees who were in attendance were called. The entertainment for the evening was a live performance by ELEW. Eric Lewis (ELEW) was a decorated, up-and-coming jazz pianist, a sideman for Wynton Marsalis and Elvin Jones, among others, and the recipient of the 1999 Thelonious Monk International Piano competition. Now, re-emerged as ELEW, he is revolutionary artist who combines virtuosic skill on the grand piano with an unprecedented openness to modern pop and rock music.
I must say, the food selection was amazing. I had the Chilean sea bass and a glass of chardonnay. The sea bass was cooked perfectly. Hats off to the chef!
After all the awards were given out and all the photos taken, guests danced the night away to songs such as “The Wobble”. All in all the event was well thought out and beautifully executed. The honorees were smiling from ear to ear to have received such an esteemed award and title. It is always great to see people who have achieved so much and done much still be so relatable. Cheers to all of the honorees!

Is it just me or does it seem like a few of the responses look as if they are coming
from brain dead visitors? 😛 And, if you are writing at additional
