Anyone who says that former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland’s limelight has been eternally dimmed by her sidekick, Beyonce Knowles, is on to something. There was no question, when the girls separated, who might have the bigger career. Before the group formally split, Rowland released Simply Deep while Knowles went on to record her first solo project the following year. Beyonce’s Dangerously in Love would earn her five Grammy awards while Kelly’s solo debut, featuring the worldwide #1 hit “Dilemma”, trademarked the songstress as a European star. As much as we’d love to compare the two, however, what I love about Kelly is that she’s seemingly safe in her own lane. From Simply Deep to Here I Am, Rowland makes music that I enjoy. She doesn’t seemed compelled to become the megastar that is Mrs. Carter and she’s a pleasure to watch during live performances. As an ardent worshiper of all things Beysus, I appreciate the undeniable friendship that the ladies have maintained even as the group disunited under public scrutiny.
Ms. Kelly is back in 2013, due to release Talk a Good Game later this year with its second single being “Kisses Down Low”. Kelly tweeted a link to the video last week and within hours critics have already accused it of being a copycat of others we’ve seen before. Call it what you might, one thing is true: Rowland is BAD…like “Hey Mrs. Parker” bad (bad meaning good)!
