Similarities can be found between Jay-Z and Jay Gatsby from the “Great Gatsby,” depite one being real and the other fictional. Both men share the same first name and both rose in rank and wealth with New York City and Long Island beaches as backdrops.
That’s where any similarity of fact and fiction ends. But now, their paths will cross as Jay-Z has been signed to produce original music for the soon-to-be released film “The Great Gatsby.” No further details are available, but the addition of Jay-Z to this already high-profile film will definitely add more star power.
When F. Scott Fitzgerald died in 1940, the New York Times described one of his best known works, “The Great Gatsby” as an “ironic tale of life on Long Island at a time when gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession.”
This new film version of one of the great American novels is set for a May release. Produced and directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan, this film is to be Luhrmann’s own “distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story.”
Jay-Z will likely put his own unique and lyrical interpretation to increase the emotional appeal of this classic tale. Expect the unexpected.
