With his job as President of the United States (POTUS) at stake, Barack Obama took the podium at the United States Capitol attempting to make the claim that his policies are making a difference, the economy is making strides toward improvement and we, as a body of people, are safe in the arms of our armed forces. He targeted a few recurring themes in his address: a fair increase on tax for the wealthy, expanded restoration of equal opportunity for all Americans, enhanced education and job training as well as immigration reform. As the election of 2012 is quickly approaching, President Obama inspired the audience with notes of progress under his administration and an outline for what will be done if re-elected for a second term.
While unemployment is still a bit more than 8%, almost 3.2 million jobs in the private sector have been created within the last 22 months. The American automobile industry was on the verge of collapse, according to the POTUS. American automakers have since, however, added nearly 100,000 jobs in the past 12 months. General Motors is back on the top as the world’s #1 automaker and Chrysler is growing as fast as any other company.
President Obama’s “boots on the border” tactic for immigration reform suggested that the proposed Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act will provide conditional to permanent citizenship in the United States for the children of illegal immigrants who obtain a college degree or serve in the military. Hispanic vote, check!
Regarding education President Obama reminded his audience that teachers matter and should be given resources to teacher and furthermore rewarded when warranted.
“Grant schools flexibility to teach with creativity and passion and replace the teachers who aren’t helping kids learn,” said Obama.
The POTUS said that he plans to propose a requirement of each state that ever student will stay in high school until they graduate or turn 18. Statistically students who finish high school are more successful as adults and such a state requirement would be ordered to inevitably increase the success rate of American citizens are they matriculate into adulthood.
The president made several other urges to congress in the name of reformation:
• Stop the tax hike on the middle class while recovery is still fragile
• Open off-shore gas and oil resources
• Pass an agenda that would help start-ups succeed
• Stop the interest rate on student loans from doubling in July
• Halt hikes in tuition rates at colleges or decrease tax-funding
Much to everyone’s surprise the Republicans thought Obama address was inadequate, censuring him for casting a greater focus on Congress’ accomplishment versus the national debt. The consensus among the Republicans is that the president’s term has been too concentrated on partisan division concerning primary issues that produce disunity in Congress. The disaccord overall is one of the contributors to America’s lack of faith in the American government. Never mind the fact that President Obama, in his speech, addressed his willingness to work with the Republican party—a quest that meets obvious and somewhat expected resistance. Others argued that President Obama used Tuesday night as an opportunity to bash the Republican Party and blame them for the lack of progress in Washington.
According to the POTUS, the overall mission is to restore the economy so that the American promise remains alive: “everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does a fair share and everyone plays by the same set of rules.” “The America within our reach,” according to Obama, “leads the world I educating its people, produces an economy built to last where hard work pays off and responsibility is rewarded.” President Obama ended his speech almost as he started, thanking the United States armed forces for their tenacity and courage while challenging the American citizens to be as strong and courageous as we move forward as a people.
“American remains the one indispensable nation in world affairs; as long as I’m president I plan to keep it that way.” -President Barack Obama
